The owners of the Premier League team, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), were looking into selling the team, according to Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, but there was no rush to close any prospective purchase.
Liverpool chairman claims club owners FSG are considering selling the club
In response to rumours of a sale, FSG, which successfully acquired Liverpool for $358 million in 2010, said earlier this month that it would look into the possibility of bringing in investors if doing so was in Liverpool’s “best interest.”
Werner told the Boston Globe, “We’re considering a sale, but there’s no hurry, no time constraint for us, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s business as usual.” “One result may be our sustained stewardship for quite some time.”
Last week, Liverpool’s head coach Juergen Klopp downplayed rumours of a sale and stated a hypothetical change in the club’s ownership would not alter his commitment to the team.
In the 2019–20 Premier League season, Liverpool won their first league championship since FSG took over the team. Under Klopp, the club also made it to three Champions League finals and won the competition in 2019. The domestic season was put on hold when Qatar hosted the World Cup, and they presently sit in sixth place with 22 points from 14 games. Roman Abramovich, a Russian, successfully sold Chelsea earlier this year for 4.25 billion pounds to a consortium of investors led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
A record nine League Cups, eight FA Cups, nine League championships, and sixteen FA Community Shields have been won by the club domestically. Six European Cups, three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups—all English records—and one FIFA Club World Cup have been won by the club in international tournaments.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the club became a dominant force in both domestic and European football under the leadership of Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, and Kenny Dalglish, who won a total eleven League titles and four European Cups for the team. Under the leadership of Rafael Bentez and Jürgen Klopp, respectively, Liverpool won two more European Cups in 2005 and 2019. In 2020, Klopp guided Liverpool to its first league championship in the Premier League era as he guided the team to their nineteenth League title.
