List of College Football National Champions
List of College Football National Champions: The SEC conference dominated college football during the 2000-2005 time frame. In 2003, they had 1 National Champion. In 2000, Oklahoma won, in 2001 Miami (FL) won, 2002 Ohio State won, 2004 Southern California won, and 2005 Texas won.
A ranking of every FBS national champion since 2000 begins with the 12 champions won by SEC teams since 2006- a total that includes Georgia’s big win over Alabama.

2001 Miami
2001 Miami was compiled of the most talented MLB players. The team had a reputation as a tough and physical group. After a losing season, coach Larry Coker took over from Butch Davis following 2000. WHile his coaching stint would end poorly, this was an appropriate decision for 2001 Miami.
2019 LSU (15-0)
LSU was 2019’s 15-0 team led by the Heisman Trophy-winning Joe Burrow in the SEC. LSU defeated Oklahoma and Clemson in the playoffs with a dominating offensive performance.
2018 Clemson
Clemson won the championship game, the first team to go 15-0 in the last 19 centuries. Clemson was also the nation’s best defense and invited to one of the best-ever conversations.
2013 Florida State
The Florida state team cruised through the season with an average margin of victory of 42 points. It was a closer call in the championship game against Auburn, but this team was dominant.
Jameis Winston is holding the Coaches’ Trophy. He won it in the BCS National Championship Game in 2014, against Auburn University.
2004 Southern California
In 2004, USC won the National Championship and was ranked first in the nation because of influential players on the team. Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, and others led the Trojans to victory with a final score of 55-19.
2020 Alabama
Alabama’s 2020 football team looked promising behind their Heisman-worthy MVP DeVonta Smith, quarterback Mac Jones and running back Najee Harris. Alabama excelled during the pandemic season, winning over 13 games by more than 10 points each and two playoff games by a total of 45 points.
2021 Georgia
The Georgia Bulldogs played at a high level, outside of their SEC championship game loss to Alabama. This helps them stand out among other SEC teams, who have struggled in recent years.
2008 Florida
In 2008 Florida completed with a perfect record. One of their losses was to Mississippi, but they got revenge in the SEC Championship game. Urban Meyer managed them as head coach and they had Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin on offense and Joe Haden on defense.
2005 Texas
2005 Texas’s quarterback, Vince Young, not only had 467 yards of total offense but was also the best player in this century. The Longhorns were more than just Joe Young—It references that multiple players were important.
2011 Alabama
In 2011, Alabama was 12-1 and had a defense with NFL talent from top to bottom. Though the team’s only lost 6-9 overtime to LSU in November, it won the championship game 21-0 against LSU.
2012 Alabama
In 2012, Alabama was the only team to beat Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in a tight game. The team also used a new quarterback in the conference championship game by losing to Georgia but then coming back from being down 14-7 in the second half to win 42-14 against Notre Dame.
2015 Alabama
Alabama had a disappointing start in the SEC and many thought that the team would never recover. However, Alabama won its last 12 games, all by double digits and defeated Clemson 45-40 during the first of four matchups against them. In total, Alabama will have defeated 8 ranked teams.
2016 Clemson
2016 was a defining year for Clemson’s football team, with the team defeating Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl and coming out as champions of the championship against Alabama. Close losses to teams like Louisville, North Carolina State, and Florida State threatened to ground this squad. However, Deshaun Watson and co found themselves making it to the playoff and saved their best performance until last week.
2009 Alabama
In 2009, Alabama was able to beat six teams by only scoring single digits. They also had the first Heisman winner in program history and ended the season undefeated. However, there were some close calls with opponents that ended up coming back against them.
2000 Oklahoma
Oklahoma was back at the top of football due to a coaching staff straight out of central casting. They were ranked number one in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll after beating Kansas State and Nebraska, but they faced some tough competition by the end of October that made them do so well.
2014 Ohio State
Ohio State became a playoff team in 2014 because they dominated Wisconsin with third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, then beat Alabama’s proud defense, and made it to the national semifinals to play Oregon and Marcus Mariota.
2002 Ohio State
The 14-0 Ohio State Buckeyes won the national championship with a surprising victory over Miami, chasing them out of the 34-game winning streak. The team had close games that only got by by single digits against schools such as Purdue, Illinois, and Michigan. The OSU was propelled to victory because Maurice Clarett had an historic rookie season for them.
2010 Auburn
Cam Newton of Auburn led the SEC with his skills, and is now an NFL player. Cam made a one year win in the best seasons from a quarterback in FBS history. Auburn falls short against the teams at the top, but they are still special.
2017 Alabama
The Alabama football team struggled at the start of the season, but eventually found themselves and earned their way to a championship. They deserved to win in overtime when they came back from against Georgia. Alabama had periods where they were not up to par with teams and lost, but in the end, they were able to find success.
2006 Florida
2006 Florida barely won 13 games, less than their next season, but they still dominated the country. Behind the quarterback duo of Chris Leak and Tebow, they then went on to trounch Ohio State in a game many predicted to be theirs.
2003 LSU
The controversy of the LSU vs. USC game was that the BCS ranking system picked LSU to be the champions instead of USC, who had taken the title from Michigan in a Rose Bowl game.
2007 LSU
LSU overcame two losses to earn a slot in the title game, but it was hard to ignore those losses that happened late in the season. LSU had a great defense and they had beaten many ranked teams.
