By constructing a twisting track for the opening Test match against India, West Indies, in the opinion of Legend Aakash Chopra, shot themselves in the foot.
On Day 3 at Roseau on July 14, Rohit Sharma and company completed an innings and 141-run thrashing of the Windies. In their two innings, Kraigg Brathwaite and company were dismissed for 150 and 130 runs, with the visitors declaring their sole innings at 421/5.
“West Indies might attempt to prepare a different pitch at Port of Spain (for the second Test) because if you play on such a pitch, this is referred to as digging your own grave,” the captain of West Indies said. On this pitch, you had no chance of defeating India. It had a rotating top.
The former Indian opener emphasised the vast disparity between the two teams. He emphasised that the competition was absent, even if the World Test Championship may have given the game more context.
Legend Aakash Chopra praises off-spinner’s spell, saying “Ravichandran Ashwin is a different person altogether”
Legend Aakash Chopra praised Ravichandran Ashwin for encircling the West Indies hitters with his magic web, saying:
Ravichandran Ashwin is a whole other animal. The ball spins after pitching, hits the pads or the space between the bat and the pad, or it strikes the bat and the pad and travels to short leg, if you see his class. If the ball moves away with the arm, he obtains the outside edge. Then, he bowls the ball slower.
The renowned commentator elaborated on the point that the cunning off-spinner was equally efficient against right-handers and left-handers:
He had two or three dismissals of that calibre there. Alick Athanaze, a left-handed batter, was then caught at short leg off bat and pad while hitting well. He is incredibly successful and very remarkable whether the pitcher is right-handed or left-handed.
Chopra emphasised Ashwin’s improvement over his already stellar record against the Windies. He stated:
Ravichandra Ashwin took seven wickets, giving him a total of 12 for the game. He has one again shown how much he enjoys the West Indies.” In the second innings of the West Indies, Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets, and Chopra commended him for doing so. Additionally, he said that the visitors played almost perfectly and demonstrated their superiority in Dominica.
