Backed by Matt Henry, and Ish Sodhi, Lewis Gregory Somerset managed to demolish Essex’s batting line-up and successfully saved 145 runs in the 2023 Vitality Blast final. However, Daniel Sams ensured that the contest went on till the end. With one wicket remaining, Essex needed 15 runs from 11 balls and Somerset was under pressure, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore took an incredible one-handed diving catch. This resulted in Somerset winning the championship match by 14 runs and their first title in 18 years.
Despite early struggles against Essex, Somerset relied on an innings of 53 from Sean Dixon to reach a respectable score of 145. Taking three wickets each, Shane Snatter and Paul Walter led the Essex bowling attack as Somerset continued to lose wickets. In reply, Essex got off to a poor start, losing their first five wickets for 55 runs in just eight overs. Although Sams pulled off a masterclass, scoring 45 off only 26 balls, it was not enough as Somerset cruised to victory.
