The Ligue 1 club has received a letter from the Paris Saint-Germain player indicating that he will not extend his contract past 2024.
The transfer saga, which has lasted through endless transfer windows, is back in full swing after Kylian Mbappe informed Paris Saint-Germain that he does not want to extend his contract with the team.
Even though the Frenchman’s current contract gives him the option to depart next summer, PSG is apparently eager to sell him now in order to keep the 24-year-old from leaving on a free transfer. The possibility of moving to Real Madrid has been brought up once more, and it appears that a transfer could be advantageous for all parties this time.
Despite the club’s enormous wealth, UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations do not permit Qatar-backed PSG to incur unlimited losses, and letting Mbappe leave on a free transfer would deprive them of a substantial source of prospective revenue. In that case, when can Mbappe leave, and will he truly do it this time?
How long is Mbappe’s PSG contract?
The most promising young player in world football signed a contract with PSG when he relocated to the French capital in the summer of 2017. He was acquired for an astounding €180 million by the club, and he rapidly established himself as a vital figure in Paris.
Despite many claims to the contrary, his influence at the club—both on and off the field—has only increased since that time. Before he sensationally signed a new three-year contract, it appeared as though he would relocate to the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer last summer.
It’s estimated that his current contract is worth more than $1.2 million per week.
However, it wasn’t as long-lasting as PSG supporters had hoped.
The three-year deal was actually two years with a one-year extension option. The choice to extend into a third year must be made by Mbappe, and he has until July 31, 2023, to do so. He informed the club that he would not be extending past the summer of 2024 in the letter he submitted to them on Monday.
Mbappe might depart PSG this summer
Mbappe has long been a favorite of Real Madrid, and it was said that club president Florentina Parez had intended to reopen the refurbished Bernabeu this summer alongside Mbappe. Madrid has attempted to negotiate a deal with Psg in the past, but this time they may decide to let Mbappe go.
Mbappe’s current deal will expire in the summer of 2024 if he decides not to alter his mind and sign a new deal with PSG. However, starting in January 2024, he would be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a team outside of France, which would basically imply that PSG would lose one of the most valuable players in the world of football in less than seven months.
Is Kylian Mbappe a player Real Madrid can afford?
When Mbappe’s most recent contract came to an end in 2021, Madrid was confident they would be able to sign him. Only one year remained on his deal, but Madrid made an offer of €200 million to sign the 22-year-old. Madrid has been quite difficult to deal with lately. The team has already lost players like Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, and Marco Asensio.
Many will wonder why Madrid doesn’t just wait for his PSG contract to expire since he will be free to sign in the near future. Although the idea of “Mbappe for free” may be alluring, it might not make sense for this actual Madrid club.
Madrid might decide that they cannot afford to lose Mbappe’s skills for another year, despite the fact that doing so might spare them the cost of a substantial transfer fee. They were previously lacking in the forward positions, but the loss of Karim Benzema has elevated the need for a striker to the top of the club’s list of priorities.
If Mbappe joins the team a year later, it might hinder the club’s efforts to assemble a world-class attacking lineup this summer. In other words, Perez might feel that they can’t afford to miss the chance to eventually sign Kylian Mbappe to a contract with Real Madrid.
