The Durand Cup, held between 16 elite Indian football clubs across divisions, is Asia’s and the world’s third-oldest football event and a representation of India’s football heritage and culture. The Durand Cup, which is run by the Indian Armed Forces, has historically produced some of India’s top football players.
The first competition took place in Shimla in 1888, and although it initially only allowed teams from the British Indian Army’s men stationed in India, it soon allowed teams from other professions as well. The renowned competition reached its 130th edition in 2021 and was named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand, who served as British India’s Foreign Secretary from 1884 to 1894. The most successful teams, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, have each won the competition 16 times.
