The No. 2 jersey, which was recently vacated by England international Bronze, who moved for Barcelona at the end of her contract this summer, has been awarded to Casparij as part of a three-year deal with Gareth Taylor’s team.
The newest addition to City’s roster was a member of the Dutch team that advanced to the Women’s European Championship quarterfinals and will begin preseason training with her new team next week. Speaking to Sky Sports News, she expressed her excitement about going to Manchester.
Gareth and I agreed on our respective playing styles as well as what that would entail for her as a right back, she added. I’ll be extremely thrilled if I can play like Manchester City does the following season. During my time there for the medical, I developed a sense of the club. The inhabitants are genuinely kind, and it seems like home. For the upcoming couple of years, I can’t wait to call it home.
The right-back who before Casparij, Bronze, spent the previous two years back in Manchester, where she made history by becoming the first defender and Englishwoman to win the FIFA Best Women’s Player of the Year title in 2020 and is still under contract with the Women’s Super League team.
However, there is no pressure on the 21-year-old to live up to Bronze’s standards.
It’s an honour that they want to sign me to replace Lucy, who is a wonderful player, the Dutch international continued. In addition to being a Manchester City legend, she is an amazing person. There are some really huge shoes to fill, but I don’t feel any pressure. They seem to have faith in me, and they know I’ll treat her right.
