Jorge Vilda omits 15 players after Spain mutiny and refuses to step down: Despite leaving the 15 internationals who staged a mutiny out of the squad for this month’s clashes with Sweden and the USA, Spanish women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda has declared he will not resign.
Eight months before the World Cup, Vilda said the rebellious players were “poorly advised” and would not negotiate with them.
Statements
He claimed to be “deeply hurt,” added that he “would not wish on anyone what I have gone through,” and criticized the club for failing to explain for wanting him gone.
It issued an open invitation to any footballers he has worked with over the years to come forward if they have any allegations of inappropriate behavior against him.
Last Thursday, the crisis reached a fever pitch when 15 players declared themselves unavailable for selection, citing ill effects on their “emotional state” and “health” from the “situation” inside the national team.
Three weeks ago, the players expressed their displeasure with Vilda’s coaching methods and group management to the national federation and the coach himself, despite a later statement insisting that they had not called for Vilda to resign.
It has been reported that ten players, including six from Barcelona, two from Manchester United, and two from Manchester City, submitted identical emails to the federation.
Then, Alexia Putellas, the current Ballon d’Or winner, came to their aid despite being injured.
Declarations
Without “admitting their fault and apologizing,” the federation stated, the players would not be allowed to return to the national squad. The group was left out of Vilda’s team announcement on Friday.
During a nearly hour-long news conference, the head coach emphasized that he would now establish a “new” national team with players who are “dedicated” to the national team, despite his repeated claims that he was open to debate.
No one should assume that the players who are joining the national team today are doing anything wrong,” Vilda repeatedly said, demanding “respect” for the players who had not joined the rebellion. Still, she never extended that to those who had.
A direct request for him to do so was specifically disregarded. He said that there were 70,000 “female players” in Spain.
Vilda claimed that the players who said they couldn’t join the national team because of health concerns weren’t forthcoming about their decision, which led to rumors about his motivations. Many people, he said, assumed that something terrible had happened behind the scenes for the players to have reached this point.
Remarks
Vilda remarked, “When I read their message, I felt bewildered since I don’t know what they are demanding: I would have liked them to have spoken plainly.”
I hope this never happens to anyone else. Questions have been raised due to the ambiguity of the players’ comments, both here and in their official remarks. That’s why people are starting to wonder if there’s more to this than meets the eye when it comes to sports, and that’s perfectly reasonable.
If there was ever any lack of respect or complaint about my behavior during my entire career, I call on every player I have ever worked with to say it publicly.
The captains have said the treatment has been beautiful. Accusers have gone into hiding after making their charges.
Vilda was quick to dispel rumors that he was like his fired predecessor, Ignacio Querejeda, who was accused of mistreating players and then fired in 2015.
Facts
He said, “You wouldn’t draw that analogy if you knew anything.” “You can’t compare this to that; this isn’t like that.”
Vilda said, “At never time did I consider leaving my position. For the simple reason that it is fundamentally unjust, given our previous actions, our current actions, and our future actions. I’ve been preparing for this for a long time, and I’m really happy that it finally came together.
Vilda was asked what might be done about the 15 players who had withdrawn their names from consideration and replied, “The solution is the players who are here.”
These 23 are the ones we’ll be using to train the national team. Regarding professional sports, the World Cup represents the pinnacle of achievement. I will go over the current roster and who’s in attendance. The 23 players now present are the most deserving.
It hurts me a lot. It’s unfair; we don’t deserve it, nor do we or Spanish football. What hurts the most is knowing how much harm we’ve done to women’s football due to our actions.
Additionally, this muddle exists due to vested interests. It’s a global farce that benefits no one and should be avoided at all costs. Just when we started to feel proud of our national team, what a bummer.
My strategy involves looking into the future, and thus far, I haven’t been able to come up with a better group of players than the ones I’ve selected.
I need to pick people dedicated to the national team and believe in what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. When anything like this comes up, I immediately think, “That’s not right, and that’s not fair.”
