Jonny Bairstow back in England Test Playing XI, Archer out of Ashes: For the lone Test against Ireland next month, Jonny Bairstow will take the place of Ben Foakes as England’s Test wicket-keeper. Despite suffering a mild groin strain when playing for Lancashire last week, James Anderson has been added to the 15-man squad.

Since making his England Test debut in 2012, Bairstow has played 72 Tests and amassed 4,133 runs at an average of 35.36. In Test cricket, he has also amassed 11 centuries and 19 half-centuries. Bairstow’s highest Test score is 151, which he achieved in a 2019 match against New Zealand.
In response, Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, commented, “It was a seriously difficult decision to leave Ben Foakes out of the team.”
In a statement, he added that Jonny Bairstow, one of the top players in the world whose performances last summer embodied what we are about, “has been excellent for England in the last year.”
Bairstow, who has a history of being a dangerous batsman capable of scoring frequently and easily, will be looking to build on his recent success in the Ashes.
Archer, however, was forced to sit out “for the rest of the summer” due to back and elbow ailments, missing 17 months of action before making a comeback to international cricket in January.
Before his Indian Premier League (IPL) tenure was over last week due to a nagging ailment, the 28-year-old played five games for Mumbai Indians.
