Joginder discusses his conversation with Dhoni before the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup: ‘It wasn’t about line, length. Mahi told me to…’ MS Dhoni is known as one of the best captains India has ever had. His long list of accomplishments shows how good a leader he is. The 2007 World T20 showed that Dhoni was a leader who could be counted on. He later won two more ICC trophies: the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
India beat Pakistan to win their first T20 World Cup. Throughout the tournament, Dhoni trusted his instincts, even during the tense Joginder Sharma over, when the medium pacer bowled the 20th over and led the team to a famous five-run win. Misbah-ul-Haq, who was in good form, hit the second ball of the over for a six, and it looked like India might not win the match. Later, on the third delivery, Misbah tried a scoop shot, but Sreesanth caught it easily. Fans can still remember the moment when India won its first world title in 24 years.
Joginder recalls interaction with MSD.
Joginder remembered talking to Dhoni before the last over and how the captain didn’t seem worried about the bowler’s line and length. In a video shared on social media by Adani Sportsline, which owns the Gujarat Giants, Joginder said that Dhoni told him not to give in to any pressure.
“The discussion before the final over wasn’t around what line and length I should be bowling or what should be my bowling strategy. Mahi told me to not take any kind of pressure. If we lose, it was on him.”
“Even when Misbah hit me for a six off the second ball, we weren’t tense. At no point, we discussed what we needed to do. Just before I delivered the third ball, I saw Misbah getting ready to play a scoop. So I altered the length and bowled a slower one. That’s why Misbah couldn’t hit it properly. Sreesanth pulled off the catch and the rest as they say is history,” Joginder, who is currently playing in the Legends League Cricket (LLC), said.
In the tournament
India beat Pakistan in the tournament’s Group D match, which came down to a bowl-out. Both teams took shots at the stumps, and India won the bowl-out by a score of 3-0.
Before getting to the final, both teams had done well in the tournament and won their groups. In the final, the Indian team wrote a new chapter in the history of cricket. The team that went to South Africa and did so well for the first time ever was not very experienced.
India has only won one 20-over tournament, and that was the World T20 in 2007. Since then, their best results are still coming in second place in 2014 and making it to the semifinals in 2016.
