Jason Holder or Jason Omar Holder, a cricketer from Barbados and a former captain of the West Indies cricket team, was born on 5 November 1991. He is an all-around right-arm fast bowler. Holder made his ODI and Test debuts in January 2013 and June 2014, respectively.
During the 2019 Cricket World Cup in June 2019, Holder participated in his 100th ODI game for the West Indies. He was recognised as the best all-around player in the world in January 2019 by the official ICC Test rankings. He was recognised as the Test Player of the Year by Cricket West Indies in August 2019. The first male West Indian player to score a hat-trick in Twenty20 international is Jason Holder.
Jason Holder‘s Domestic Career
Holder was signed by the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL auction a few days after making his international debut in 2013 for his base salary of $20,000. Sunrisers purchased him in 2014. The Sunrisers Hyderabad also gave him a batting promotion, sending him to bat before all-rounders Karn Sharma and Parvez Rasool. He was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2016 year auction. In the four games he participated, Holder amassed 22 runs at 5.50 and two wickets at 51.50. He joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2020 to fill in for the injured Mitchell Marsh during the IPL. Holder was acquired by Northamptonshire County Cricket Club for the upcoming County Season.
The 29-year-old lost his test leadership to Kraigg Brathwaite this year after losing his white-ball captaincy in 2019.
He was included in the Barbados Royals roster—previously the Barbados Tridents—in July 2020 for the Caribbean Premier League.
Holder was purchased by the Lucknow SuperGiants for 8.75 crores during the 2022 IPL Auction.
Early Career
On February 1, 2013, Holder played in his first ODI match against Australia. His first noteworthy ODI performance came in the opening match against Pakistan in July 2013, when he took 4 for 13, although the effort was overshadowed by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, who took seven wickets as West Indies were bowled out for 98. In the third ODI of the same series, Holder put up a brilliant all-around effort, hitting 19 not out off 9 deliveries to assist his team draw the game. He did this with Kemar Roach. In January 2014, he played his first T20 international match against New Zealand, with statistics of 2-34 in 3 overs.
Holder was named for the Test team in June 2014 after strong ODI performances. On June 26, 2014, he faced New Zealand in his first Test match. Although he did not pick up any wickets in the first innings, he delivered four maidens effectively. Holder’s first Test wicket came in the second inning when he knocked out Ross Taylor for 16 runs. He finished the game 2 for 50. Holder added 90 runs to the total in the game, including his first Test fifty. West Indies, however, fell short by a score of 53 runs.
Captaincy
After firing the former captain, Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies Cricket Board selectors appointed him leader of the squad for ODI matches. He became the youngest West Indian captain in history at the age of 23 years and 72 days. He was appointed captain of the Test team for the trip to Sri Lanka on September 4, 2015. He became the second-youngest test captain in West Indies history and the 15th-youngest test nation overall.
At the 2015 World Cup, he guided his side to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by New Zealand. Holder hit two straight 50s in the competition, both against losing teams (South Africa and later India). Holder’s 104 runs allowed in the game against South Africa are the second-worst set of bowling statistics in World Cup history.
In their most recent game against New Zealand in the quarterfinals, he also scored a 42 on 26 balls. He helped earn a draw in the first Test by scoring his first Test century against England in April 2015.

Holder, a supporter of the Premier League football team Tottenham Hotspur, was named BookBarbados.com’s brand ambassador in February 2022.
