Jalen Brunson scored 29 points to push the New York Knicks to a 128-92 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers on 5 Jan. The sneaky guard connected on 11 of 20 shots, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc. The former Dallas Mavericks guard scored three rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to his stat line.
Two of Brunson’s points came as a result of a steal by defending MVP Joel Embiid. On top of the key, “The Process” was scanning New York’s defense when the point guard scooped the ball out of the big man’s hands. Tyrese Maxey was desperately following the 6-foot-2 playmaker as he sprinted to the Knicks’ floor.
Jalen Brunson couldn’t dunk in a rout of the 76ers
Jalen Brunson stepped up for a dunk but settled for a layup. His jump was a tad short, and a dunk attempt would have resulted in a missed field goal. Several Twitter/X sites quickly uploaded his “Shaqtin-a-Fool” moment.
Brunson’s colleagues on the New York Knicks could only chuckle at his ridiculous effort to complete the fastbreak with a highlight reel dunk. With little over six minutes remaining in the game, the made shot increased their advantage to 109-81. The Knicks players had plenty of reasons to celebrate the unsuccessful attempt.

Since dealing for ex-Toronto Raptors forward OG Anunoby, the Knicks have won three straight games. RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a 2024 second-round selection were traded by the Knicks. While Anunoby has been helpful, Brunson remains the Knicks’ most potent danger.
In the absence of Quickley, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau would rely even more on Jalen Brunson for scoring and playmaking. Thibodeau could never rely on him for rim-rattling dunks.
Jalen Brunson provides a strong argument to be named to his first All-Star team.
Several observers questioned Jalen Brunson’s omission from the All-Star game last season. Many thought the lefty point guard had done enough to earn a spot among last year’s elite. During the 2022-23 season, he averaged 24.0 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 68 games.
Brunson has been the Knicks’ most steady and reliable player despite the changes and injuries. He might miss a few dunks, but he’s building a solid case to play in the All-Star game next month in Indiana.
