Jakob Ingebrigtsen won 5,000-meter gold medal at global athletics championships
Jake Wightman of Great Britain defeated the Norwegian to second place in the 1,500-meter race. but the Norwegian went clear after the early stages had been slow in the very warm early evening circumstances to avoid any possibility of a similar last 200-meter burn-up.
Jacob Krop of Kenya finished second to Ingebrigtsen in 13 minutes, 09.24 seconds, while Oscar Chelimo of Uganda won the bronze after American Grant Fisher appeared to be headed for a medal until he was tripped with 90 metres remaining.
I love how it feels. Ingebrigtsen stated, “I felt extremely well today. I won it because I needed it.
The race was one of the most widely anticipated of the entire championships because it included three existing Olympic winners. Ingebrigtsen, Selemon Barega of Ethiopia, and Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, the 5,000-meter world record holder. All took first place finishes in their respective events in Tokyo.
Despite the steady pace, Cheptegei made the early running.
The heat was so intense that Ingebrigtsen twice veered off the course on the return straight to use a water station before hurriedly rejoining the group.
The largest group of spectators at the championships in Eugene, Oregon, a city rich in long-distance history. And the residence of former Olympian Steve Prefontaine, really got into it and gave a rousing cheer around a fully packed Hayward Field.
The Norwegian reached the front three circuits out. And pushed up the tempo as the race gathered behind him. Realising how he had been outkicked around the final curve in the 1,500m.
He never gained more than a few metres of separation. And it was enough for him to celebrate by somersaulting as he crossed the finish line.
