Jackson and Melbourne making headlines as Opals head to New York trip. For preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup happening this year in Sydney, Australian Opals now head to New York to practice against Canada. The 4 time Olympian Lauren Jackson is making headlines since opals are heading to NY.
Followed by the intense training session last week in Canberra, the opals are now heading to face North America, the world 4th ranked side. The team will reunite with head coach Sandy Brondello, who is currently providing coaching to New York liberties in WNBA.
Notable players in the Australian Squad are grabbing the attention
Australian Opal squad for practice matches include Bec Allen, Marianna Tolo, Sara Blicavs, Darcee Garbin, Steph Talbot, Sami Whitcomb, Kristy Wallace, Jade Melbourne, Lauren Jackson, Tess Madgen, Maddy Rocci, Ezi Magbegor, Anneli Maley, Cyla George, Alana Smith.
Out of the squad, Melbourne and Jackson grabbed the attention of the media and critics. The former Australian player, 41-year-old Jackson has made a shocking comeback. Earlier this year, she was praised for her fitness, which led to her comeback to the 25-year squad. The former basketball player impressed in the camp after returning from international retirement before Olympics 2016.
Now a FIBA fame member and former player is looking forward to playing for the country after she gained glory in 2006 for Australia. Coach Brondello says ” Jackson has won medals at every Olympics and 3 World Cup appearances, she knows how to win. She has a hunger for success and will bring an edge to the squad.
On the other hand, the youngest member of Australian Opals, Melbourne significantly impressed in matches against Japan. She has managed to earn a spot in the squad heading for New york. Melbourne says” I’m really excited for the selection in the camp, I love being with girls on the court and being a part of opals legacy and learning about the culture here. I can’t wait for another opportunity to do this. There are only 80 days left ahead of matches in Sydney, the coach is happy to have the team here.
The members from their WNBA teams including Bec Allen, Steph Talbot, Ezi Magbegor, and Sami Whitcomb will join the team. However, Kristy Wallace is not available for practice.
