Jabeur, Thiem’s Success Among The Top Stories In Tennis Today
Jabeur, Thiem’s Success Among The Top Stories In Tennis Today: Ons Jabeur, the Arab Sports Personality of the Year, was honored this evening with a ceremony in Tunis. Dominic Thiem reached his first final in almost 2 years tonight at the Rennes Challenger match, September 18th.
Ons Jabeur has been the Tunisian national soccer team’s captain since she was 14 years old, and her accomplishments won her the Arab Sports Personality of the Year award
The former world number one has made early exits in most of his matches since his return this year. But he has reached the final in a Challenger tournament, which is his best result. Thiem will now compete on the ATP Challenger Tour and could make a title run later this month at Rennes, France.
With the draw at the Toray Pan Pacific Open released, Naomi Osaka will first need to defend her title against Daria Saville before reaching a maiden WTA final. 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova reached her maiden WTA final at the Chennai Open while Elena Rybakina reached her first since winning Wimbledon a few months ago.
Ons Jabeur has a career-high ranking of World No. 2, with appearances in multiple Grand Slam finals and a WTA 1000 title. She has proven to be one of the best players on tour this year. With her popularity and the upcoming WTA tournament in Tunisia, many people will get a chance to see Ons live.
Jabeur’s rise to the top has fetched her the Arab Sports Personality of the Year award. After Dominic Thiem lost his first ATP match of the year, he decided to compete in the Rennes Challenger. Once there, he reached the final. His last ATP final was nearly two years ago at the 2020 ATP Finals (he lost to Alexander Zverev).
Thiem was playing Ugo Humbert and both players are capable of a lot more, but haven’t been doing as well over the past year. The final is in Rennes.
Linda Fruhvirtova reached her first WTA final after overcoming Nadia Podoroska 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at the Chennai Open. Linda Fruhvirtova finally regained a break in the deciding set to tie up the match and will have to face Magda Linette in the final. Katie Swan retired mid first set due to an injury from playing second on court.
There will be a rematch of the Wimbledon final between Elena Rybakina and Katerina Siniakova at the Slovenia Open. Elena has not been consistent since Wimbledon, but she seems to have rediscovered her winning form with wins over Ana Bogdan in the semifinals and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the final.
She will face Katerina Siniakov in the final. The Czech won the doubles title at the US Open last week and she has been on a roll recently. She’s looking to keep this momentum going through the remainder of 2019.
Naomi Osaka will defend her 2017 Pan Pacific Open title in Tokyo. She has recent disappointing results and is on a four match losing streak. She wants to perform well at the tournament that is held in front of her hometown and win her title back.
