Its TV vs Digital- Little India will decide to push for India’s big IPL digital battle
Recently, BCCI sold media rights to one of the biggest tournaments in the world, the IPL- the Indian Premier League. The media rights were sold at a whopping Rs 43000 Crore in one of the never seen auctions online. With the world’s top contenders Sony, Star sports, Amazon, Apple, YouTube, Disney Hotstar, and Viacom18 were fighting to woo the World’s most popular cricket Tournament and its digital crowd.
Ultimately, Star Sports and Viacom18 won the case in which Star handled TV telecasts and Viacom18 will live stream digitally.
India is home to a diverse crowd who will decide whether these 43000 Crore by companies were worth it or overrated.
The diverse Indian Crowd will decide the future of Digital Media Rights
India is home to migrants who use the internet to make daily phones. A young crowd with WiFi and internet connectivity on phones and other devices. The working class spends their income on necessities. Also, the rural crowd lacks internet connectivity and electricity for TV and digital live streams. Many people even buy their phones on EMI, so it’s unlikely they will spend money on subscriptions.
The diverse crowd will determine whether the e-auction by broadcasters was worth it or not. However, the BCCI insiders, while talking to Indian Express with anonymity, say digital will outperform television. Recently, Deloitte made a forecast that India’s mobile users in 2024 will Surpass 100 million.
This digital vs Tv is grabbing eyeballs, both broadcasters are eager to provide a new and exclusive look to their viewers. BCCI needs to move away from its common global feed policy for digital and television. BCCI has previously handled its partners working in different directions.
Now that the auction is done and dusted, both the broadcasters are at different ends, it will be interesting to see new ideas and ads for tv and digital platforms.
