R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have received praise from Ishant Sharma for accomplishing the unfathomable by dismissing the West Indies in one and a half sessions.
On Day 3 of the first Test, which took place in Roseau on Friday, July 14, the two spinners together claimed nine wickets as Kraigg Brathwaite and company were dismissed for 130 in their second innings. In the end, India defeated Pakistan by an innings and 141 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.
Ishant was effusive in his compliments for Ashwin and Jadeja during his game review on JioCinema, saying:
No one anticipated that a team would be able to win in just one and a half sessions, but we all know Ravichandran (Ashwin) and Jaddu’s (Ravindra Jadeja) calibre.
The Indian pacer emphasised that the pair caused mayhem on a helpful track as was to be expected:
This wicket had a lot of turn and help for them and they showed why they are the best spinners in the world, said one observer, because they have picked up wickets on flat pitches where the ball doesn’t turn much.
Ishant was then asked if he anticipated the match ending on Day 3. He responded:
“Unquestionably,” we said when we watched Rahkeem Cornwall and his left-arm spinner bowling. Dust was flying from the ground, and this wasn’t an Indian surface, which is sluggish and where the ball gets soft. The Dukes ball is still very hard. Here, you get a turn and a bounce. Thus, it becomes exceedingly challenging.
Jadeja took two wickets while giving up just 38 runs in his 21 overs, while Ashwin concluded with statistics of 7/71 in 21.3 overs. The other West Indies wicket to go in the second innings was taken by Mohammed Siraj.
Regarding R Ashwin’s 12-wicket performance, Ishant Sharma said, “He got the fruits of his labour”
Further questioned about R Ashwin taking his seventh 10-wicket haul, Ishant Sharma responded:
Ashwin is a fantastic spinner, among the greatest in the world, and is ranked first in tests as a result. Whether you bowl fast or spin, it is really tough to pick up 10 wickets because you need to bowl a lot of overs and train in the nets for that. He therefore enjoyed the results of his labour.
Ashwin’s final match statistics were 12/131. With eight occurrences, the off-spinner and Anil Kumble are the Indian bowlers with the most 10-wicket match hauls.
