In Jadeja’s unavailability, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was named the lone spin option for the opening Test. In Centurion, the latter was economical, recording figures of 1/41 from 19 overs.
Jadeja replaces Ashwin as the visitors attempt to even the two-match series at 1-1. India also made another change, replacing Shardul Thakur with Mukesh Kumar. South Africa, however, won the toss and elected to bat first.
Team India captain Rohit Sharma revealed at a pre-match news conference that all of the players in the team were healthy and eligible for selection.
In the first Test, India was defeated by South Africa by an innings and 32 runs. After being sent into bat after losing the toss, the visitors were dismissed for 245 in 67.4 overs.
KL Rahul produced a determined hundred, but there was no pushback from the other players. Virat Kohli (76) was the only hitter to surpass the 30-run mark in the second innings, as the Indians were dismissed for 131 in 34.1 overs.

He did, however, make an impression with his left-arm spin, taking 6/138 off 58.2 overs in South Africa’s opening innings. Jadeja took out Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, and Jacques Kallis.

South Africa won the Test by ten wickets after India was dismissed for 334 and 223 respectively, while the Proteas responded with 500 in their first innings and chased down a target of 58 with all their wickets in hand.
