The 2023 IPL will not be aired in South Africa after SuperSport failed to secure broadcast rights for the popular cricket tournament in the world. South African cricket fans will not be able to watch the cash-rich league this year.
The broadcaster announced to its subscribers on Thursday that they were unsuccessful in securing a deal for the world’s biggest T20 league.
The tournament is very popular in South Africa, partly due to the many sought-after South African cricket players. With the introduction of SA20, where the popular IPL teams were part of the ownership and the league was so successful and this announcement came as a huge blow for the South African fans.
A total of 17 South Africans will be playing in this year’s competition With Faf Du Plessis and Aiden Markram captaining Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023. Important players David Miller, Dewald Brevis, Kagiso Rabada, Sisanda Magala, and Marco Jansen are participating in the league.
The tournament, which features players from around the globe including South Africa and the cash-rich league gets underway on Friday when the reigning champions Gujarat Titans take on four-time champions Chennai Super Kings.
