Former Indian batsman, Rohan Gavaskar, reckoned that the Indian national T20 International team should revolve around Suryakumar Yadav. The right-handed Yadav climbed up the ranks in international cricket over the last one and half years. All credit goes to the fearless brand of cricket he plays.
Saba Karim said that either Suryakumar Yadav or Dinesh Karthik has to be ‘slotted’ in No. 4. In her reply, Rohan Gavaskar countered saying Surya Kumar Yadav does not need to be ‘slotted’ anywhere. In fact, Rohan feels that the Indian team should be the one to revolve around him.
Amidst the talks of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul returning, there has been a question about the role of Surya Kumar Yadav in the Indian team. From playing at No. 3 and No. 4 to becoming an opener, Surya has been seen in a number of roles for the Indian team. But which position he should be allotted to in the Asia Cup, and potentially, the T20 World Cup 2022 is the question.
Rohan Gavaskar, former India cricket player, does not feel Surya needs to be ‘slotted’ into a position. He believes that the team needs to revolve around him. Jr. Gavaskar gave his opinion on the importance of Surya Kumar Yadav to India’s T20 team.
“You said you can slot Surya at No. 4. I disagree there, Surya doesn’t need to be slotted anywhere. I think this T20 team needs to revolve around Surya. You have got to figure out where is the best you can get out of him, is it at the top of the order, or No. 3 or No. 4, you put him there then,” said Gavaskar.
On being asked if he would pick Rishabh Pant for the No. 4 spot considering his record was not as impressive as it should be in T20Is,
Gavaskar replied saying, “There are certain slots in that batting order which might be non-negotiable in terms of Dinesh Karthik being a finisher towards the end, Rohit Sharma opening the batting. But everything else is up for grabs.”
“As I said, Suryakumar Yadav can open, and can bat at No. 3 or No. 4. Rishabh Pant can also be a floater depending on how many overs are left when wickets fall. In T20 cricket, it’s not so much about No. 3 or No. 4, it’s about how many overs are left, and you send players accordingly out there.”
When asked if the India team could leave out Pant from the playing XI entirely, Rohan said that the wicket-keeper batsman is a once-in-a-generation player.
“Where Rishabh Pant is concerned, he is a once-in-a-generation cricketer. It does not matter if he is left-handed or right-handed. If you have got a player of that kind of match-winning ability, that kind of talent, you pick him, it is a no-brainer,” he said.
