India’s performance against China was saved by Vandana, but they must improve going into the World Cup. The Indian women’s hockey team’s head coach, Janekke Schopman, was asked about her team’s penalty corner conversions before their World Cup game against China. Schopman said that the team would be working on them during Monday’s practice, but he also said that China is good at defending penalty corners.
Schopman was on the mark. India’s important equalizer was scored by Vandana Katariya from a variation on a penalty corner. Before that, China had frustrated them by blocking their many attempts. With their drag flicks, neither Gurjit Kaur nor Deep Grace Ekka was able to get past China’s defense. India had to change things up in order to tie the game, which helped them do so. So far, India has played two games. Both of them ended 1-1, and Vandana scored both goals.
Vandana – The Name of Indian Hopes
Vandana’s reaction after scoring the goal that tied the game showed how much it meant to her and the team. As she let out a roar, the players and coaches breathed a sigh of relief. Before taking the penalty corner, the Indians talked for a bit longer in the huddle. When the usual drag flicks stopped working, it was time to try something new. Gurjit might have wanted to take the hit, but she stuck to the plan. Gurjit passed the ball to the right side of the goalie, where Vandana ran and deflected it with one hand. Just before the end of the third quarter, they did everything right to tie the score at 1-1.
If either team had won today, it would have been easier for them to get into the top three in Pool B. So far, none of the teams in the group have won their games, and the top three teams will probably be decided on July 7, when they all play their last pool games. India will play New Zealand, which will be another tough team for them to face. India hasn’t been bad in its first two games, but it will need to get better.
