Varinder Singh, who was 75 years old and a part of Indian hockey’s illustrious history, passed away on Tuesday, and the Indian hockey community is mourning his passing. On the morning of June 28, in the wee hours of the morning, he passed away in Jalandhar.
His Fame
The two-time Olympian was an essential cog in India’s several remarkable triumphs in the 1970s. He had also competed in both the Summer and Winter versions of the Olympics. His phenomenal accomplishments include winning the men’s hockey world championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1975 and taking home the gold medal. At the famous World Cup, when India defeated its archrival Pakistan by a score of 2-1, this victory over Pakistan is still India’s lone gold medal.
