Indian Cricketer Dinesh Karthik Reveals Hard Knocks Of Disappointing Start
Indian Cricketer Dinesh Karthik, who himself has endured a similar experience as an Indian cricketer, explained how disappointment followed the pretty good start. The India wicketkeeper explained how new players have to deal with the unexpected by learning from their mistakes.
Tendulkar finished playing international cricket in November of 2013, where he was playing two ICC T20Is against the West Indies. There were many Indian matches taking place as well that day, but it was almost as if Tendulkar’s retirement overshadowed everything else in the country. The stadium of Kolkata’s Eden Gardens and Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium were chosen for his final two international games of his career. It was a show time for Indian fans.
In the first Test of the Kolkata vs West Indies Test series, Tendulkar scored 74 runs in his final innings for India. Those runs were talked about more than Cheteshwar Pujara’s century, who scored a hundred as well. With an innings win, India wrapped up the Test series and Tendulkar retired at the end of it.
But in Kolkata, the World Cup was nearing its end, and a controversy emerged. Tendulkar had announced that the Test career of another super talented Indian batsman would begin: Rohit Sharma debuted for the Indian cricket team in Chennai and hit an outstanding 177 his debut match. He followed that with another century – 111 not out in Mumbai which marked the start of what seemed like a wonderful Test career by Rohit, who also had red-hot form in ODIs at this time as well.
Surprisingly, though, Rohit’s Test career fell flat after that point. With Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara becoming Indian cricket’s next famed middle order, Rohit was a regular in the team but struggled to hold his place. Looking back at how Rohit barely had a promising start and then following it up with being a disappointment, veteran Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik explained how the star Indian batter had to deal with disappointment in the first half of his Test career.
As of now, few players have given a start in Test cricket that is as successful as Rohit. In his first two matches, he got centuries, and there seemed to be excitement about the Indian youngster. However, life is never exactly what you expect, and ever since then Rohit has been met with curve balls in every tournament he entered.
Rohit the Test batter had to wait for his opportunities but has a long list of records thanks to his success in T20/ODI cricket.
Rohit’s Test career reached new highs but the fact that he was still not able to break into the Test team as an automatic or a certainty selection almost made him think maybe, he wasn’t made for Test cricket. Of course, all that changed in 2019 when Rohit was made India’s Test captain and from being a dubious starter, he transformed into India’s captain of all formats. However, those years of uncertainty were tough for Rohit to deal with.
Rohit always believed that he had something to contribute to Test cricket, but in the conversations that I have had, he always felt that things might not go his way. He played recklessly at times, but he believed that he would come back. He didn’t just come back as fast as he should and when all was said and done, Rohit resigned to the fact that maybe it’s just going to be white-ball cricket for him now.
