Mominul Haque scored 84 on the return, but Umesh Yadav and R Ashwin each took four wickets to put India in the lead. Bangladesh was 213 for 5 at one point after tea when they were batting first in the second Test in Mirpur, but they lost their final five wickets in the space of just 14 runs to be dismissed for 227.
The top seven hitters for Bangladesh all reached 15, but nobody else could get above 26 save Mominul. They lost a wicket every time a partnership appeared to be developing. A partnership of 39 or more was present in five of the first six wickets, but the best was only 48.
India was given 14 overs to bat. Even though the game lasted an additional 30 minutes, only eight of the balls could be bowled due to poor lighting. KL Rahul displayed restraint in that brief exchange with Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan, finishing the day on three without being out after 30 balls. Shubman Gill, who had a perfect 14 off 20, which included a six and a four, was keeping him company.
India began play in the morning on a grassy field with three seamers and two spinners, replacing Kuldeep Yadav, the Player of the Match from the previous match, with Jaydev Unadkat. Unadkat had not taken a test in twelve years, and this was just his second ever. India played 118 Tests between his two appearances, the second-highest number of games missed by a Test cricketer.
With the fresh ball, Umesh and Mohammed Siraj found movement, but neither really pitched it up to take full advantage of the grassy surface. There were several plays and misses as a result, but Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Bangladesh openers, managed to survive their stints.
Unadkat, the slowest of the Indian seamers, bowled first change and found less movement, but his higher release point earned him additional bounce. Soon, he was consistently hitting hitters on the gloves while bowling with four slips, a gully, and a short leg.
When Bangladesh reached 39, Zakir made the decision to cut a short delivery from Unadkat, but the additional bounce ultimately proved fatal. Unadkat got his first Test wicket when the ball struck his glove and floated to fourth slip.
In the following over, Ashwin bowled Shanto out cold. When a length ball that was coming from behind the wicket went with the arm and smacked the batter in the pad as he was playing for the turn, he shouldered his arms. He was declared out on the field for being leg before wicket, and a review affirmed the umpire’s decision with ball-tracking evidence of the ball touching off stump.
As the fourth player, Shakib attacked Ashwin from the air even before he reached double figures. Prior to dancing down the track later in the session to place Ashwin beyond deep-midwicket boundary, he initially blasted Ashwin inside-out over extra cover.
