IND vs. AUS: SKY opens up the chase, Virat Kohli closes it
IND vs. AUS: SKY opens up the chase, Virat Kohli closes it. Only one of Virat Kohli’s 63 boundaries came in the latter third of his innings, but it was a six over wide long-on off the first ball of Daniel Sams’ final over of the chase when only 11 runs were needed.
India won the T20I series 2-1 with a six-wicket victory in Hyderabad, thanks to a four-hit by Hardik Pandya off the penultimate ball that squirted outside the outside edge of short third man.
T20
However, some old concerns remain as they prepare for the final match before the T20 World Cup, a series against South Africa.
Again, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and company were swept away in the Powerplay by the impending presence of Cameron Green, who smashed 52 off of only 21 balls despite the lack of considerable movement from the new ball.
India batted their way back from 56 for 1 in four overs, which was a remarkable achievement. Despite being 140 for 6 after 17 overs, the Australians were eventually brought up to 186 for 7 thanks to a 27-ball 54 from another strong hitter, Tim David.
Australia’s use of hard lengths on a pitch where slamming the ball into the surface makes life difficult for batsmen in the Indian Premier League. A relatively sticky surface.
A substantial outfield caused the chase to stall immediately after it began. By the fourth over, both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma had been out, and Suryakumar Yadav had stepped in to take charge of the chase in a way nobody else could have.
Facts
Yadav blasted 69 off of 36 balls, hitting the ball wherever he wanted to until the final delivery he faced when he could not get over a jumping wide long-off.
Daniel Sams unleashed an incredible on-the-up leg stump punch from outside the ring that soared well beyond the outer rings and into the second deck. Adam Zampa casually chipped and flicked the ball, but it went well past wide long-on.
Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, two of Australia’s brightest players in the Test arena, were savagely pounded over deep midwicket, regardless of their bowling speeds.
Kohli sometimes tried to slog the ball out of the ground but was unsuccessful. When successful, he would select his spots and time the lofted boundaries. As Suryakumar sped by him, he wisely gave his partner the strike during their 62-ball, a third-wicket stand of 104 runs.
After Pandya walked outside off the first ball of the penultimate over, he helicoptered Hazlewood over a leaping David at long-on to win the game for India and secure a draw.
India had only 53 runs to win off 36 balls, but Suryakumar’s departure at the end of the 14th over caused them to huff and puff. Even though they could have preferred a more convincing victory thanks to Suryakumar’s dominance, at least batting isn’t their current Achilles heel.
Green scorches the turf.
Green attacked India aggressively from the first pitch. He looks like he has what it takes to develop into a formidable T20 batsman.
He showed lightning-fast hands, especially for a height man, by ducking under the incoming ball and flaying it over a deep square leg as Bhuvneshwar sought to swing one into him.
To no one’s surprise, Bhuvneshwar went shorter and broader the following time, and he punished him under the sheets. He smashes hard both behind and in front of square, and his enormous reach makes sitting-duck boundary possibilities out of defensive wider deliveries.
Bowlers like Bhuvneshwar, who thrive on attacking the stumps or operating in the corridor during the Powerplay, were forced to back away from Green’s swinging arc as the game progressed.
He gave up a wide in the process, but Green’s steeper sailed over the thick edge and into the waiting arms of the pursuing backward point runner.
Axar
Axar Patel found some purchase off the strip and got a few deliveries to stop on the batsmen, halted Green’s surge and helped India recover admirably by dismissing Josh Inglis and Matthew Wade. He also hit a home run, striking out Glenn Maxwell with the first pitch.
David’s reach ultimately prevailed as he smashed sixes down the ground off full deliveries, despite a promising start by Bhuvneshwar in the death overs.
In addition, Australia did very well against Bumrah, scoring 50 runs off of his four overs. No sign of the reluctance usually causes batters to retreat in the face of his ungainly, hefty deliveries.
Instead, they made correct assessments of his bowling, slogging his slower wide ones for fours and Sams scooping a full delivery on pace over short fine leg for four. Harshal Patel had to provide a brilliant final over to contain the damage.
