On Tuesday, July 18, during the SFU-LAKR MLC match in Dallas. Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis destroyed his fellow countryman Adam Zampa with 22 runs off four deliveries.
Zampa and Stoinis played a key role in Australia’s successful 2021 T20 World Cup winning run. From 2020 to 2023, they also worked together with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL).
After choosing to bat first and winning the toss. SFU got off to a flying start thanks to an 88-run opening combination between Matthew Wade and Fin Allen.
Stoinis came to the crease after Kiwi opener Allen fell in the eighth over and hammered three massive sixes and a four off the last four balls of Zampa’s subsequent over.
Zampa, who is ranked eighth in the T20I bowling rankings, was at 0/36 after Stoinis’ attack after just two overs. The leg spinner, though, displayed exceptional composure to end his session after four overs at 3/41. The 31-year-old, who was assigned to bowl the 17th and 19th overs, allowed just five runs off 12 deliveries and claimed the crucial wickets of Corey Anderson and Shadab Khan.
On the other side, Stoinis played a brilliant cameo (37 off 18 deliveries) that gave the SFU innings a boost. In the match against bottom feeders, fellow Australian Mathew Wade led the team with 78 off 41 balls, helping them to a massive score of 212/7.
All of the hitters played selflessly, according to Matthew Wade in SFU-LAKR MLC match
In the first innings of the crucial match against SFU-LAKR MLC opener Mathew Wade praised the entire lineup for their selfless hitting from the outset.
Wade top-scored for SFU with a scorching 41-ball 78, but Marcus Stoinis (37 off 18 deliveries) and Corey Anderson (39 off 20 deliveries) also made significant contributions, helping SFU to 212/7 in their 20 overs.
Wade commented at the interval on the team’s outstanding at-bats.
“All of the hitters batted selflessly. We only intended to provide pressure to the opposing bowlers; we had no specific total in mind. The new ball initially played well, but when the pacers bowled the cutters, it slowed down, according to Wade.”
The 35-year-old also discussed his performance and his ability to bat for the squad in various places during the course of his career.
“At all positions, I have really loved batting. The managers and coaches force me to play every position. I take great delight in hitting at every position. You never feel at ease using their batting lineup. We should have a strong opportunity if we play well, Wade continued.”
Since each club played five games in the inaugural MLC season, both teams entered the match in dire need of a victory to keep their hopes of making the playoffs alive. SFU split their first two matches, while LAKR suffered two defeats.
Being the only team without a victory in the competition thus far, LAKR will very probably be eliminated if they lose once again in the current game.
With big-hitting Andre Russell at the crease, the Sunil Narine-led team needs another 50 runs from 12 deliveries to reach their current score of 163/5 in 18 overs.
