Mumbai finished the first day with a massive 457-3 score, including the attractive hundred of rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal. After opener Prithvi Shaw (19, 4×4) left in the fourth over, one-drop Surya took the crease and hit two fours. The first was a perfectly timed shot to the midwicket fence, and the second was a classic cover drive off two balls he faced from pacer Rakshan Readdi.
The left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan (0-139) gave the right-hander his 50 in just 46 balls, and in his next over, he hit the spinner to the fence for a paddle sweep four. Surya, who was unbeaten on 84 at lunch, used a pull, perfectly timed cover drives, and paddle sweep shots to shape his innings.
Mehrotra, on the other hand, caught him LBW in the second over following the lunch break after he had only added six runs to his score. Rahane, a test batsman, played a perfect defense-and-aggression inning. In his first over, he even stepped out to hit office Rayudu over his head for six.
Rahane, who reached fifty against Thyagarajan with a straight-driven four, played excellent front-foot drives and back-foot punches during his unbeaten three-figure run. Rahane had a remarkable journey from 85 to 100. He hit the onside with three consecutive fours, then he hit pacer Ravi Teja with a backfoot punch and a front foot off-drive.
With a single-through cover drive off of Mehrotra, he got to the magic figure. Rahane, who has scored 37 first-class hundreds, last scored a century against Australia in the 2020 Melbourne Test with a score of 112.
