Rishabh pants, the wicketkeeper-batsman for Team India, had one of the most memorable ODI innings in recent memory when he got his team out of difficulty against England in the pivotal third game at Old Trafford in Manchester.
On July 17, 2022, he struck an unbeaten 125 from 113 deliveries to help India defeat the hosts 2-1 in the series.
With more than four overs left, India was able to dismiss England for 259 thanks to Hardik Pandya’s four-wicket haul, which was made possible by short-pitched bowling. The top order of the visitors once more failed to withstand Reece Topley’s left-arm seam bowling. After five overs, the score was 21-2 when Pant entered the batting order at position 4.
After Suryakumar Yadav was removed for only 16 runs, Hardik Pandya joined him. The pair rebuilt the innings similarly to when they did it in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal at the same location. For the fifth wicket, Pant and Pandya partnered for 133 runs.
Even after Hardik was dismissed, the keeper-batter maintained his assault and reached his first ODI century. He made sure Team India finished the game with more than seven overs to spare, winning the series.
Here are a few highlights from his outstanding innings:
After finishing the run pursuit, Pant is renowned for giving the dressing room a thumbs-up signal. For his actions, he was voted Player of the Match, while Hardik Pandya was chosen Player of the Series.
“When the team is under pressure and you hit like that, that’s what you aim for” – Rishabh pants
Rishabh Pant has been under scrutiny, especially in the short format, and his first 100 probably came at just the right time.
He has only played three ODIs since his career high, which he achieved during the New Zealand tour following the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Has not played since an unfortunate car accident in December 2022. The goalkeeper is recovering from several surgeries. Despite positive progress over the past few months.
He still has serious doubts about his participation in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Championships in India in the October-November window.
After winning the series against England, the batsman spoke about it during his post-game presentation at Old Trafford.
“I hope to remember my first ODI century for the rest of my life. But when I was there, I was always focused on one ball. When the team is under pressure and you hit like that, that’s the goal you’re aiming for. I love playing in England and will do everything in my power to continue enjoying cricket. The more cricket you play, the more experience you gain” he said.
