In a match against Sussex, Shubman Gill scored a hundred for the first time for Glamorgan. Shubman Gill, an Indian batsman, hit his first County Championship century (119 runs, 139 balls, 16 fours, 2 sixes) for Glamorgan against Sussex on Tuesday at Hove. At the end of the first day, Gill was still unbeaten with 91 runs after 102 balls. However, it took him a few more balls to get to the big score before he mistimed a lofted shot over mid-wicket and was caught by Sean Hunt off off-spinner Jack Carson.
Both of the sixes by him – one off Pakistan pacer Faheem Ashraf’s ramp shot over slips and the other off pacer Bradley Currie’s superb pickup shot over mid-wicket, were classy shots. It was Gill’s 38th First-Class game and his 8th century. Glamorgan posted a video of Gill getting his 100th run on Twitter with the words “Century!!! Shubman Gill makes a maiden Glamorgan century. 123 balls, 12 fours, 2 sixes. Well batted, Shubman.”
Gill on the rise
Gill, who is likely to be picked for India’s upcoming three-match ODI series at home against South Africa, scored the most runs – 119. Wicketkeeper Chris Cooke and Glamorgan’s captain, David Lloyd, performed well with the bat too. On Day 1, Glamorgan reached 221 for 3, and they were 533 for 9 declared on Day 2.
In his first game for an English county earlier this month, Gill scored 92 runs off 148 balls against Worcestershire at Cardiff. He then went on to get 22 and 11 against Middlesex at Lord’s. So far, Gill has had a tremendous First-Class career. He has scored 3,121 runs in 38 games, averaging more than 50, and has made 8 centuries and 15 fifties.
The young man from Punjab is only the third Indian to play for Glamorgan after former India head coach Ravi Shastri (1987–1991) and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly (2005). He is one of the eight Indian cricket players who are playing in the English domestic season this year.
Gill has been in great form this year, with a batting average of over 100 and Player of the Series awards against both the West Indies and Zimbabwe (245 runs in 3 innings at Harare, including an unbeaten 130, his first ODI century). In IPL-2022, he hit 483 runs in 16 games for Gujarat Titans.
