International Cricket Council (ICC) Turns 2024 U-19 World Cup To South Africa. On Tuesday, an ICC Board meeting was held and this decision was made.
After detailed deliberations, the Board has decided to retain the November 10 decision of suspending the SLC. The board said cricket involving island teams would continue uninterrupted, although the suspension would not be rescinded.
“It was the unanimous decision of the board that the suspension cannot be lifted. Cricket will continue as normal in the country,” a reputable source told Cricbuzz. Ousted ICC chairman Sammy Silva attended the board meeting held at ITC Narmada in Ahmedabad.
The Under-19 World Cup was scheduled to take place between January 14 and February 15. The dates will clash with the second edition of the SA20, which will run from January 10 to February 10, but a top Cricket South Africa (CSA) official told Cricbuzz that the two events could be held together as the T20 league is overseen independently of CSA. It is being done autonomously by a body. “Yes, as we have done with the SA20 and U19 Women’s T20WC earlier this year,” CSA CEO Enoch Nkwe said.
The option of hosting the event in Oman and the United Arab Emirates was also considered, but ultimately South Africa was preferred due to better infrastructure: the 14-over-50 team event required three grounds, and Oman had There is only two. Furthermore, moving teams between the UAE and Oman would have been an expensive proposition and the board ultimately focused on South Africa. CSA has agreed to give up three spots for the Multi-Nation Championship.
The board also decided that the Sri Lankan team will continue to play international cricket despite the suspension of the SLC. The game will be run through a suspended SLC, which will receive controlled funding. SLC chief Silva was of the opinion that the confusion could have been avoided but said cricket would remain uninterrupted in the country. “I have requested the ICC Board to allow play to continue and the members have upheld our request,” Silva told Cricbuzz. He also confirmed that the Sri Lanka Under-19 team will participate in the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.
The SLC was suspended on the grounds of government interference. This decision was taken after an impromptu virtual board meeting on November 10. The suspension was maintained on Tuesday.
