To increase the quality of play for all levels of participants, we need to ensure that there are enough coaches, umpires and pitch curators in Member countries. To do this, we need to create a way for people intensively train and work in their discipline of choice. The early stages of the programme are showing increasing interest by both Members and participants.
The ICC has helped Indonesia by creating programs to identify talented coaches and teach them how to spread cricket across the country. The Coaching Foundation Certificate programme has been particularly successful, forming the basis for general cricket leagues in Indonesia.
Within the last year, Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Association has created and certified a new group of coaches. Many are women, as well as PE teachers and national team players. Female coaches will be able to qualify for ICC accredited coach and tutor positions in time for the country’s first ever ICC global event–the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Nuwan Shiroman, head coach of the Indonesia National Team, has said that launching an ICC certification course has been timely because they just hosted the ICC U19 Women’s Regional Qualifiers. Winning this tournament has motivated more youth to play cricket in Indonesia.
More courses are being created to help grow the cricket community around the world. These include: Level 2 and Level 3 coaching courses, a course in aspiring umpiring and certification for match officials.
ICC’s first step in the development pathway for groundspersons is now open for registration. The course is called Pitch Curator Foundation, and it will provide fundamental knowledge to those aspiring to build and maintain turf cricket pitches around the globe.
