According to Aakash Chopra, the Indian think tank has decided not to play Shreyas Iyer in T20I cricket for now.
Shreyas scored 53 runs in the last T20I against Australia in December last year.
Although the middle-order batsman was named to the Indian side for the ensuing T20I series against South Africa.
He was not given a game and was subsequently overlooked for the three T20Is against Afghanistan.
In a video posted to his YouTube account, Chopra was asked about Shreyas’ unexpected departure from the Indian squad and if he will be used in the future.
The former India opener was unsure. Whether the Mumbai hitter will make it into the hosts’ playing XI for the forthcoming Test series against Australia, adding.
With KL Rahul apparently not being considered for the wicketkeeper-batsman position in the home Tests against Australia. Srikar Bharat or Dhruv Jurel are set to play as a specialist wicketkeeper.
With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal already in the top five. The team’s management will have to pick two from Shreyas, Rahul, and Shubman Gill for the remaining berths.
“He is not part of the race” – Aakash Chopra on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s status in India’s T20I and Test teams
Aakash Chopra was also questioned why Ruturaj Gaikwad is underappreciated and hardly discussed. The cricketer-turned-commentator was also quizzed about Sanju Samson’s limited chances.
Chopra believes that India would be seeking for a wicketkeeper who can bat in the middle order during the T20 World Cup.
He went on to say that the Rajasthan Royals captain might be a serious candidate if he bats at No. 4 or lower in the IPL 2024 and performs well.
