The brand-new SA20 league, which will begin on January 10 in South Africa, promises to revolutionize South African cricket and increase the sport’s fan base. MI Cape Town, Durban’s Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the six teams participating in the top-tier league.
The league has 33 games starting on January 10, with the opening match between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals in Cape Town and the championship game on February 11. In the league stage, the franchises will compete against each other in a double round-robin format. The top four teams in the points table will advance to the semi-finals.
It is interesting to note that groups are involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on each of the six franchises. In addition, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has signed a ten-year agreement with Viacom18, making the Indian market equally important to the league’s success.
The SA20 is South Africa’s second attempt to run a franchise tournament after the Mzansi Super League failed. The league will undoubtedly provide opportunities for youngsters and local cricketers to gain exposure and move closer to a spot on the national team thanks to CSA’s investments.
