Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young Team Indian batsmen opener, scored a century in his Test debut on Day 2 of the Dominica Test against the West Indies on Thursday.
The 21-year-old, who gained his first call-up to the Indian squad after some strong domestic performances and IPL exploits, has looked completely at ease throughout his debut Test innings.
After India prevailed by a meager 150 runs on Day 1 of the opening Test in the West Indies, Jaiswal went undefeated on Day 40. He continued his impressive performance on day two, posting a well-deserved 100 score in the 70th inning on his Test debut In India, Alick Athanaze paddled a good leg for a single.
With his clay, Jaiswal also became the first Indian fly-half to score a try clay on his away debut. The left-handed hitter finished the day undefeated with 143 balls from 350 and hit 14 four-pointers. He’ll try to make a big hit out of his first test tone.
List of Indian batsmen who have scored a century in their Test debut
Jaiswal is the 17th Indian batsmen to make a century on his Test debut. Lala Amarnath was the first Indian to strike a century in his Test debut. During a Test match against England in Mumbai in 1933, he scored 118 runs, including 21 fours. Unfortunately, India was defeated by nine wickets in the Test.
Deepak Shodhan (110 against Pakistan in Kolkata in 1952) and AG Kripal Singh (100* against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1955) were the next two Indian batsmen to register maiden Test tonnes, while Abbas Ali Baig became the country’s first player to hit a Test century away from home. In 1959, he scored 112 points against England in Manchester.
Hanumant Singh scored 105 against England in Delhi in 1964, while Gundappa Viswanath scored a duck and a century in his debut Test against Australia in Kanpur in 1969. He scored 137 in the second innings after being removed without scoring in the first.
Surinder Amarnath’s Test career was brief, but it was launched by a memorable 124 against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976. The strike occurred during a spectacular eight-wicket victory. Mohammad Azharuddin, a former captain of India, made his presence known by scoring 110 against England in 1984–1985 at Eden Gardens. He also scored highly in the following two tests.
He ultimately scored 187 points on 174 balls. It’s interesting to note that Mumbai players, Rohit Sharma (177 against West Indies in Kolkata in 2013), Prithvi Shaw (134 against West Indies in Rajkot in 2018), Shreyas Iyer (105 against New Zealand in Kanpur), and now Jaiswal, have recorded the last four hundred made by Indian batters on Test debut.
