South African U19 sensation Kwena Maphaka’s letter to Jasprit Bumrah
Kwena Maphaka, a young South African speedster, grabbed headlines after leading the hosts to a dramatic victory over the West Indies in the second game of the U19 World Cup 2024 on Friday, January 19, in Potchefstroom.
Maphaka was rightfully named Player of the Match after a spectacular 5/38 performance.
The way he celebrated his wickets went viral because it reminded many of how famous Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah would occasionally celebrate, the usual ‘I don’t know’ gesture with his palms out wide.
Kwena Maphaka described in a video posted to the International Cricket Council’s Instagram page following South Africa’s victory how he chose to unleash the ‘I don’t know’ celebration.
Chasing a score of 286, the West Indies were bowled out for 254 with 9.5 overs remaining. It went on to demonstrate how important and timely Maphaka’s findings were.
Kwena Maphaka talked up on his performance
What impressed out about Kwena Maphaka’s performance was his ability to rise to the occasion precisely as South Africa needed a breakthrough.
From 225/7, Jewel Andre and Nathan Edwards put on an important partnership of 25 runs for the ninth wicket.
South Africa needed some inspiration, and Maphaka returned to the attack, taking two of the remaining three wickets. Here’s what the left-arm pacer said about his performance.
It was probably fitting that Kwena Maphaka took the final wicket of the game, trapping Isai Thorne in front.
South Africa’s next U19 World Cup game versus England will take place at the same location on Tuesday, January 23.
