Hockey India Announces Cash Prize for FIH World Cup 2023 to Boost Morale
India’s campaign will get off on January 13 when they take against Spain, and HI has decided to award the squad players with Rs 25 lakh apiece and the support personnel with Rs 5 lakh each for their success in earning a gold medal at the famous quadrennial tournament.
In the event of a silver medal, the winners would get Rs 15 lakh, while the support staff would receive Rs 3 lakh. In the event of a bronze medal, the winners would receive Rs 10 lakh each, while the support staff would be eligible for a prize of Rs 2 lakh.
The decision was reached by the Hockey India Executive Board during a virtual meeting on December 24.
In a release, HI president Dilip Tirkey stated, “Finishing on the podium at a Senior Men’s World Cup is not an easy undertaking, and we believe this announcement will further raise the motivation levels of the already glory-hungry Indian Men’s Hockey Team.
India last appeared on the World Cup podium in 1975, when they triumphed against Pakistan to win the prized championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
India has already won three medals at this illustrious competition. Aside from winning the championship in 1975, the team won a bronze medal in the first competition in 1971, a silver medal in Amstelveen in 1973, and a bronze medal at the second competition in 1972.
The Indian squad is in pool D together with England, Spain, and Wales.
