Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi says Haris Rauf should have played in the upcoming Test series in Australia rather than the country’s Big Bash League.
Given the circumstances in Australia, the former all-rounder believes the speedy would have liked bowling with the red ball.
Rauf was initially included to the Test team for the high-profile three-match series, but withdrew, angering senior selector Wahab Riaz.
In December 2022, the 30-year-old made his Test debut against England. He just took one wicket and bowled in the first innings of the contest.
Former head selector Afridi told media at the MCG:
Former head selector Afridi told media at the MCG that Rauf would have found ample of purchase on the Australian wickets for Tests. According to ESPN Cricinfo, he stated:
“I believe Haris Rauf should be on this side rather than. With his speed, he would have done well and enjoyed himself on the pitches Australia created in Perth and here in these circumstances.”
Rauf, who is now playing for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL, has been putting up solid performances. The right-arm speedster has six scalps at an average of 16 in four outings.
I’ve never had the feeling Shaheen is injured – Shahid Afridi
Shahid Afridi further said that Shaheen Shah Afridi is not injured, dismissing any concerns about the dip in pace. However, the 46-year-old agreed that fast bowlers are under a lot of pressure, saying:
I’ve never had the idea that Shaheen is hurt. You cannot play as a fast bowler if you are injured. He understands his role and how vital he is to the squad.
We have high expectations for the fast bowlers since they have performed well in the past. We anticipate Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen, and others to do well in every match. In cricket, maintaining unwavering consistency is difficult.
Pakistan presently trails the three-match series 1-0, with the upcoming Test at the MCG hanging in the balance.
