According to Harbhajan Singh’s, Virat Kohli would hold a similar significance at the 2023 World Cup as Sachin Tendulkar did at the last tournament in 2011.
In 2011, Kohli was a youthful member of India’s World Cup-winning team. After then, the Men in Blue haven’t won a World Cup, and the contemporary batting legend will seek to break that drought later this year when he may have one more opportunity to win an ODI World Cup.
When asked about his hopes for Kohli in the 2018 World Cup during an interview with News24 Sports, Harbhajan replied:
“He will play a significant part in the World Cup. He resembles Sachin Tendulkar in terms of stature in 2011. Actually, the team should relieve part of his strain by making those responsible judgements that they would complete the task instead of applying too much pressure to him.”
The former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator says that the former captain should be allowed to play his best game:
“I will advise letting Virat Kohli play his own game if the other players do that task. The man is unbeatable when he plays his own game. There is no denying that he is a champion player.”
One of India’s most reliable performances in ICC competitions has been Kohli. He only managed one run in each of the World Cup semi-finals in 2015 and 2019, so if India advances to this year’s knockout round, he’ll want to perform better.
Set him a little bit loose in important games, Harbhajan Singh’s said of Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli should be allowed complete freedom in crucial games, according to Harbhajan Singh:
“People claim he is a chase master, but in my opinion, he is arguably the greatest at batting whether you persuade him to chase or bat first. He is incomparable to anyone. But in important matches, let him loose a little.”
The former Indian spinner continued by saying that the World Cup hosts have enough talented hitters who could finish the job even without Kohli:
“Don’t tell him the match would end if Virat is eliminated. That shouldn’t take place. No problem if Virat escapes; we can handle it. We have formidable players like Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. I thus hope that the strain is somewhat lessened and that he can play his game.” In 274 ODIs, Kohli has scored 12898 runs at a fantastic average of 57.32. The Indian batting staple appears to be finding his lost mojo, especially in ODI cricket, despite having seen a little lean stretch across forms since 2019. In nine games this year, he has scored 427 runs overall, including two hundreds, at an average of 53.37.
