“Had faith in him, just as Faf had faith in me in 2021.” Devon Conway’s opening partner, according to Ruturaj Gaikwad: Ruturaj Gaikwad, an opener for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has said that he and Devon Conway have a strong understanding of game situations and are happy to exchange roles depending on who is in a better rhythm on any given day. Gaikwad said that he had confidence in Conway, just as his previous opening partner Faf du Plessis did.
For CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Gaikwad and Conway have been in outstanding form. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, May 23, they once more added a crucial 87 runs in Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans (GT). Since the start of the tournament, both batters have made a fantastic pair.
In his opening remarks during the press conference following the game, Gaikwad explained his equation with Conway while batting in the middle:
“I believe that in 2021, if you take a look, Faf had many 30s, 40s, or 50s and would just leave after 50s, whereas I mainly succeeded in scoring 70s, 80s, and 100s. So, in my opinion, you should just make sure to stick around until the 15th over when someone is assaulting from the other end. This year, I simply thought that the impact player rule gave me a fantastic opportunity to practice that mindset (playing shots early and taking risks) for a solid 15 to 20 days. Therefore, I believe that when I believed everything was going pretty well, I knew Conway would.
On Tuesday, Gaikwad struck 60 off 44 while Conway contributed 40 off 34. CSK then put up 172/7 before bowling out GT for 157 to secure their spot in the IPL Final for the tenth consecutive year.
