Golden State Warriors History
The Warriors were known as Philadelphia Warriors in 1946. They were one of the first teams in the Basketball Association of America. Peter A. Tyrrell owned them. He also owned the American Hockey League’s Philadelphia Rockets. In the first season of the league, 1946–47, the team beat the Chicago Stags four games to one to win the championship. Early scoring star Joe Fulks led the way. In 1959, the team picked Wilt Chamberlain in the draft. Six times, he was the team’s top scorer. He quickly started breaking NBA scoring records and changed the way the NBA plays forever. Along with Chamberlain, the Warriors drafted big man Nate Thurmond before the 1963–64 NBA season.
Return to San Francisco and A Walk to the Present Status
In April 2014, the Warriors started the process of buying a 12-acre (4.9 ha) lot in Mission Bay, San Francisco, where they planned to build a new 18,000-seat arena that would be ready for the 2019–20 NBA season. The Warriors lost to the Los Angeles Clippers 141–122 in their first regular-season game at the Chase Center on October 24, 2019. In the draft for the 2020 NBA Draft, the Warriors got the second overall pick, which they used to pick James Wiseman. After trading for D’Angelo Russell, the Warriors got the seventh pick in the 2021 NBA Draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves and their own 14th overall pick. The Warriors won the third spot in the Western Conference on April 10, 2022. This was the first time they had made it to the playoffs.
Controversy
In January 2022, the team got into trouble when one of its owners, Chamath Palihapitiya, said over and over again on a podcast that he didn’t care that Uyghurs were being killed in China. The team distanced itself from Palihapitiya by saying that he does not speak for the franchise and that his views do not represent those of their organization. But the Warriors’ statement was criticized because it didn’t say anything about the Uyghurs or the genocide of the Uyghurs.
