Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 French Open by taking down ninth seed Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round on Sunday (June 6). After her win, the tennis world came forward to sing the Ukrainian’s praises.
Day 8 of Roland Garros saw several surprises and brilliant moments, and one of them was Elina Svitolina upsetting Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-6(5). The stirring victory helped the former World No. 3 reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since coming back from maternity leave, in her very first Slam appearance.
Elina Svitolina gave birth to her daughter Skai last October, and she marked her return to the tennis court in Charleston earlier this year. After a series of disappointing results in WTA tournaments, the 28-year-old stunned Anna Blinkova in the final at Strasbourg last month to win her 17th career title.
Elina Svitolina is having a memorable campaign in Paris too these last few days. She has defeated Martina Trevisan, Storm Sanders, Anna Blinkova and now, Daria Kasatkina, to keep alive her hopes of winning a maiden Slam title.
Following Svitolina’s valiant display at Stade Roland Garros on Sunday, tennis fans flocked to social media to applaud her for getting back to the top even after becoming a mother.
“like idc, GOD IS A WOMAN, cause how on Earth is she doing all of this, I am in awe,” one Twitter user wrote.
Other fans hailed the 28-year-old for producing top-notch performances regularly without any signs of fatigue.
“Honestly her kid will be so proud of her when she sees this a few years down the line,” one fan wrote.
