Hansi Flick’s first Germany squad since last year’s World Cup includes five new faces after Marius Wolf (Borussia Dortmund), Mergim Berisha (Augsburg), Felix Nmecha (Wolfsburg), Josha Vagnoman (VfB Stuttgart) and Kevin Schade (Brentford, on loan from Freiburg) each received their first senior national team call-ups.
Flick also announced that Bayern Munich star Kimmich will take the armband in the absence of his club and country teammate Manuel Neuer. Thomas Müller is also missing, but not through injury; Flick revealed last the week that the 33-year-old Bayern forward wouldn’t feature this time as he looks at younger options.
Jamal Musiala would have been one of those, but withdrew with a thigh injury that could see him miss Der Klassiker. However, Florian Wirtz is back in a Germany squad for the first time since collecting the last of his four caps in October 2021. Bundesliga top scorer Niclas Füllkrug keeps his place in the squad and will most likely compete with Kai Havertz and Timo Werner for a place in attack.
Following on from the legendary Claudio Pizarro’s retirement, there are no Peruvian players currently representing teams in the Bundesliga, which previously housed the likes of Jefferson Farfan, Paolo Guerrero (Peru’s all-time top scorer) and Carlos Zambrano.
Zambrano made 137 Bundesliga appearances across spells at Schalke, St. Pauli and Eintracht Frankfurt, while Luis Advincula featured twice in the German top-flight for Hoffenheim back in the 2012/13 campaign. Both have been named in Juan Reynoso’s squad – who has won three of his four matches in charge – for their two-game tour of Europe, which includes a fixture against Morocco in Madrid.
