Germans Win Three Medals At The European Championships
Germans Win Three Medals At The European Championships: Tonight four players in the Women’s Singles Event at the European Championships in Munich secured medals, with three of them coming from Germany. Tomorrow we will know who will go through to the final and the second and third place. In the penultimate stage, Sabine WINTER of Germany plays against Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria in one semi-final, while Nina MITTELHAM meets Shan Xiaona in the other semi-final.
The opponent was tough, but the medal is a perfect ending to the tournament for Nina. The support from the spectators helped give her the final questor to win and close out with a victory. She has never won a singles medal before so it’s really an exciting feeling for her with all she did throughout the week. She was also in both singles and doubles events that year which led to disappointment, but now she can take comfort in this award.
It’s a shocking revelation that three Germans made it to the semifinals of the Championships. We were seeded first, second and fourth in Europe, so nobody knew if we would make it to the semi-finals. Playing singles at the tournament is tough–there are so many good players and everyone is looking for an edge on the competition. To win a medal at European Championships is quite difficult–it’s got its downfalls too. Nina will play against SHAN in round three of next week’s bracket.
I would trust whoever said we would play the semifinal in the tournament before my next match. But I am happy playing with either of them. I think these two players deserve to be in the final and they are a great team that I don’t want to miss either. Even if one of us doesn’t make it to the final, we still know each other really well and play on the same club team in Berlin which is why both of us will go for it.
In today’s Singles, day earlier POLCANOVA and BERNADETTE clinched gold in the doubles together. Today she faced off against each other to determine who will win the medal in the singles, after 6 games of they were playing, it was POLCANOVA who book her place in the semi final (11:4, 4:11, 11:8, 11:6, 6:11, 11:5).
I’m really exhausted. Yesterday we won gold together, today we play against each other, and the schedule is so busy. If you play in all three events, today we play at 14:15 and then at 18:20, there’s no time for lunch. This is such a difficult tournament, but I made it. I still can’t believe it so much because I’m really exhausted right now.
Bernadette SZOCS commented that it was difficult to play against each other two days after winning gold together. They regret that they weren’t as focused during their match, but had things go right in some situations. They mentioned a few points where they felt they were better than their opponent and were able to take advantage.
With an opponent who is one of her best friends, Sabina WINTER can be confident in her game tomorrow. They are old friends and understand each other very well and look forward to a close match tomorrow. With a win over Giorgia PICCOLIN, Sabina WINTER cleared the way for herself to make it to the finals (11:9, 11:8, 11:7, 11:6).
The German tennis player was disappointed with her results at the start of the tournament, but she won a single medal in Munich despite lower expectations. This victory made her proud and she is glad to have taken home one historic memory as well. The tennis player thought it would be more successful for her in doubles, but ended up with a singles medal instead.
In the only match that the previous day against Irina Ciobanu, the score was 3-2. I knew that I could win and if I played my game that I would win, so I stayed calm during play. I managed to keep my head clear, focused on playing my game and winning 4-0 with four goals rather than 3-2 by only getting one.
With success already under her belt, she is in good shape. She has also done well in doubles and mixed doubles, so she’s a strong contender for the gold. But if I play my best game, maybe I’ll get an opportunity to play her. All I can do is put up a fight and see what happens at the end of the day.
After losing the first round of the Women’s Singles Event and feeling immediate pain, Germany’s HAN Ying withdrew from the tournament before reaching the quarterfinals. Sabine WINTER moved on to the quarterfinals.
Dr. Thomas Garn, the German team medical staff doctor stated: Ying sustained a muscle injury in her lower back warming up on the practice floor, which then caused her to give it a try and not be able to do it anymore. We will know all the details with an MRI once we collect more information.
In the women’s singles draw, Romania’s Bernadette SZOCS had gone through the Singles Round of 16 as well as the Double and Mixed Doubles draws. Exhausted and crying with joy, SZOCS had won a Gold Medal already in these three events but reached the Semi-Final before being eliminated from play.
Szonja Szočo said he made a game-changing move to change this 3-0 deficit that he started at 0-3. “It was like a final,” says the 25 year old. He feels a new confidence, and credits it because he beat Szocs in their most recent match.
The world body-building champion, Tatiana KUKULKOVA lost 1:4 to Giorgia PICCOLIN of Italy; Bulgaria’s Sofia POLCANOVA thrashed Natalia PARTYKA 3:2. Germany’s Shan Xiaona got the better of Elizabeta SAMARA while Portugal’s Shao Jieni brought home a victory over Sabina SURJAN.
