Gambian Women’s Footballers Get to Shine In A New Chapter
Gambian Women’s Footballers Get to Shine In A New Chapter. The Gambia wants to push its female footballers onto the world stage with their new women’s football league and symposium. They want to learn from other stakeholders in the women’s soccer industry on how to improve.
The popularity of women’s football continues to grow worldwide. This even includes Gambia. The vision of the Gambia Football Federation is to promote development and support for women’s programs in the nation.
The GFF uses football to advance the status of women and ensure they participate in all areas of development, with a commitment to the national football development plan and its goals.
As part of their vision for the future, Algeria held a three-day workshop with FIFA in partnership to coach coaches in their new U17 women’s league. The workshop was only one part of the build-up to the women’s football symposium where stakeholders in the game met to share their views and experiences.
The event allowed delegates to network, collaborate and exchange ideas about the development of women’s football in Gambia. Representatives from FIFA’s Women’s Football department and the First Lady of Gambia, Her Excellence Fatou Bah-Barrow were also present.
Gambian women’s football is seeing quick growth, challenging cultural boundaries and empowering girls and women. Thuba Sibanda, who is part of the project on Women’s Football in Gambia says it was great for him to be on the ground to see just how fast it has grown, as well as meet the coaches, key stakeholders, and administrators working hard behind-the-scenes to put their foot on the gas pedal.
The Gambian Football Federation is confident that support for women’s football in Gambia will help to improve the quality and increase participation. In recent years, there has been a FIFA development programme to help the national team, so there is evidence that progress has been made.
In 2014, the GFF created initiatives such as Grassroots development plan to take women’s football in the country to a new level of development. In addition, FIFA-supported girls grassroots festivals were held in all seven regions across the country.
Women’s football coordinator position was created in Gambia in 2014, while a lot of FIFA coaching courses were held in the same year. These efforts were followed by projects like symposiums and workshops to boost the participation of women within the sport, a nationwide coach development programme, as well as involvement in the Women in Football Leadership Programme; just to name a few.
A delighted Sibanda admires our work in Gambia and sees it in person. The Federation is pushing a bold plan to see more girls playing football, women becoming professional athletes, and enhancing the quality of the women’s game.
Gambia is a country where girls who dream of playing football are found and nurtured by the game. Women working in this field will have a vital role to play in unlocking the next level of women’s football in Gamba.
