Gahanga Cricket Stadium, which inaugurated in October 2017, has earned the moniker “Lord’s of East Africa.” The non-profit facility has an ICC international quality wicket, a pavilion, a bar, and community amenities. It has received and been nominated for a number of significant architecture and technical awards. The three vaults, which were supposed to resemble the trajectory of a bouncing ball as well as Rwanda’s undulating hills, were built using 66,000 tiles composed mostly of local dirt mined on site.
The tiles were manufactured by hand, mostly using local labour obtained through the Vision Umurenge Project, a Rwandan government-led social protection programme aimed at the two poorest groups of the population.
