According to a source at the Spanish club with knowledge of the situation, Barcelona and Manchester United have reached an agreement regarding the probable sale of Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong. However, the move still needs to be approved by de Jong.
Frenkie de Jong set to join Barcelona
According to a club representative who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to discuss the transaction publicly, United has agreed to pay Barcelona 75 million euros ($75 million) plus an additional potential 10 million euros in variables for the 25-year-old De Jong.
De Jong would still need to approve the transfer to the English Premier League team even though he has a contract with Barcelona through June 2026. He hasn’t left Camp Nou yet, according to reports.
The person from Barcelona who was aware of the deal, however, claimed that Xavi Hernández had informed De Jong that he would not be a vital member of his team. Barcelona would like that a firm agreement be struck before the club departs on Saturday for a preseason tour of the United States.
As it works to pay off its debt, Barcelona has been trying to cut back on its payroll. The club official claimed that De Jong’s remuneration was no longer appropriate given the organization’s revised financial goals.
Since Barcelona paid Ajax 75 million euros (at the time, $85.5 million) to acquire De Jong in 2019, he has made 140 appearances, the majority of them as a regular starter.
In 2015, De Jong started working officially at Willem II. A year later, he made the switch to Ajax for a €1 fee. An optional sell-on clause reduced the symbolic charge. He won a domestic double and advanced to the Champions League semifinals while playing for Ajax, establishing himself as one of the top young midfielders in Europe.
