Jehan Daruvala will serve as the team’s reserve driver for Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, according to a statement released by Mahindra Racing on Wednesday.
Formula E Team Jehan Daruvala, a Star Indian Driver, Joins Mahindra Racing
The 24-year-old competitor just wrapped up three F1 tests with McLaren and is the first and only Indian to win an F2 race.
In his position with Mahindra Racing, Jehan will spend time at the team’s Banbury headquarters working on the simulator with engineers and offering car development and racing support for drivers Lucas Di Grassi and Oliver Rowland. The team’s first-ever home ePrix in Hyderabad, India, slated for February 2023, is one of the events he is expected to attend.
Jehan has had a successful single-seater career, winning four Formula 2 races and placing on the podium numerous times. He advanced quickly through the junior formula ranks before making the jump to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019, where he earned two victories and placed third in the championship in his first season. He was then promoted to FIA Formula 2, where he has been successful for the previous three seasons on the track. He competed for the Indian team Mumbai Falcons and finished third in the F3 Asian Championship in 2021. Along with three pole positions, fastest laps, and another five podium finishes, he won three races.
We are thrilled to welcome Jehan to our squad, said Asha Kharga, chairperson of Mahindra Racing, with regards to the deal. Mahindra Racing, which actively promoted Formula E as a founding member, is happy to welcome a talented young Indian racer to this wonderful competition. Jehan will bring a wealth of knowledge to our development programme with his single-seater experience and outcomes. This year is especially exciting for us because it marks the debut of Formula E in India. We can’t wait to provide Indian fans with a truly global experience.
In the FIA Formula E World Championship, Mahindra Racing makes this acquisition at the start of a new era. In addition to three thrilling new race venues, Season 9 will mark the premiere of the brand-new Gen 3 car. The team aims to regain the lead by extending Rowland’s contract and recruiting Formula E World Champion Lucas Di Grassi.
