Biography
Lewis Carl Hamilton MBE (born January 7, 1985, in Stevenage, England) is a Formula One racing driver for the McLaren Mercedes team and the youngest driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship (2008).
Lewis addressed McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at the 1995 Autosport Awards ceremony and said, “I want to race for you one day.” A little over three years later, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz signed him up for their Young Driver Support Programme. Twelve years after first meeting Dennis, he made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2007 after winning the British Formula Renault, European Formula Three, and GP2 championships in 2006. Hamilton is often referred to as “the first black driver in Formula One” due to the fact that his father is black and his mother is white.
For the 2007 Formula One season, Hamilton finished second overall, behind Kimi Räikkönen by a single point. The next year, he won the title for the first time by a single point against Felipe Massa. He has publicly announced his intention to complete his Formula 1 career with McLaren.
In 2008, at the very last race of the season, he triumphed and became Formula One World Champion. When it came to the BBC’s award for sports personality of the year, he came in second. If it were a different year, Lewis Hamilton likely would have won. The British Olympic team, however, had a banner year in 2008. Chris Hoy, who won three gold medals, won the competition and the title.
Since 2008, when he first won the title, his best finish was fourth. This season, though, while competing for Mercedes AMG, he will have a great opportunity to grow.
Controversy Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s controversial moves and comments off the track have caused tension on the track and off. As someone in such a prominent public position, his every remark is dissected by the media. While competing in a race in Spain, he encountered racist hecklers. There was racial slurring and other forms of abuse directed against Hamilton from Spanish fans because of his intense rivalry with Fernando Alonso, a rider from Spain. Lewis recognizes that his intense competitiveness can be a source of conflict with his other drivers.
Lewis Hamilton has been accused of dodging UK taxes by some lawmakers. However, young black people, in particular, look up to Lewis Hamilton as an inspiration and a role model. The Olympic sprint winner Carl Lewis was the inspiration for his name. Hamilton is the first and only black driver to compete in Formula 1.
It was reported that he became a vegan and stopped drinking in 2017.
