When the hosts won the third Test by three wickets, they maintained themselves in the running for the five-match Test series, and Shaun Pollock praised England fast Mark Wood for his exploits with the bat and the ball.
The former captain of South Africa referred to Wood’s ability to consistently bowl at rates beyond 140kmph as his “X-factor. In the lead-up to the fourth Ashes Test, the seasoned player predicted that he would continue to improve.
The declaration was made following Wood’s seven wickets, including a match-winning wicket, in the Headingley Test. In the lowest tier, the right-handed hitter was equally skilled with the bat. To lead his side across the finish line in Leeds, the 33-year-old came back with scores of 24 (8) and an undefeated 16.
“Mark Wood, in my opinion, would seize the chance to demonstrate his abilities there at Headingley. He’s large and towering and so energizing. He was well rested when he arrived, and I have no doubt that he will play with great confidence in the upcoming game. One to be wary of.”
The 49-year-old also gave Wood credit for rapidly wrapping the tail to resolve England’s issues from the first two Tests:
“Mark Wood adds a little X-factor. The way he tied up the tail and how he performed at Headingley both depended on it. Those were crucial factors for a quicker bowler to accomplish. He did a great job at that.”
It is great to have a bowler that can reach 95 mph – Ben Stokes regarding Mark Wood
After the third Test ended at Headingley, Ben Stokes recently praised Mark Wood for his incredible speed. Addressing the media at the post-game presentation.
It’s incredible to have a 95 mph bowler. He is simply a free spirit when using the bat. Returns to the clarity. The game changed drastically when 24 off eight balls were hit. Provides you a higher chance of success, however it doesn’t always work.
In the fourth Test, which will begin on July 19 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, Wood will now try to build on his success. To reach 100 Test wickets, the quick bowler only needs three more.
