Former Oklahoma Players Speak Out On Cale Gundy Resignation
Former Oklahoma Players Speak Out On Cale Gundy Resignation: After Gundy’s unexpected resignation on Sunday evening, some of his former players took to social media to speak on his behalf.
The Oklahoma programme and fan base are still hurting from the unexpected resignation of veteran assistant Cale Gundy on Sunday night.
Gundy, who played for the Sooners in the early 1990s and has been an assistant coach since 1999, stepped down after using a “racially charged slur” while reading from an unknown player’s iPad, according to Brent Venables.
Following the abrupt resignation of OU’s longest-tenured assistant, several of Gundy’s former players, including current running backs coach DeMarco Murray, have turned to social media to discuss the matter.
“I came here in 2006 for the tradition and the passion of this programme,” Murray said in a Twitter message. “I also have a lot of respect for Coach Gundy; he’s taught me so much over the years, and I will always support and love him, as well as his entire family.” During position meetings, what happened was wrong. We must utilize this opportunity to educate and unite. I know Coach Gundy’s character and who he is, but more importantly, I know his heart and what he stands for. I wouldn’t be the guy I am today if he hadn’t shown myself and my family, as well as numerous other student athletes, his love and wisdom throughout the last 25 years. He’s not only my former coach, but also a fantastic buddy who will always be that and more.”
Former running back Adrian Peterson also shared his sentiments, expressing his support for Gundy.
“I want you to know that I am here for you as you cope with what I can only assume is one of the most difficult circumstances you’ve ever faced!” Peterson wrote. “I recognise you…not just as Coach Gundy, but also as a guy, husband, and parent.” I’ll always have nothing but admiration and admiration for you! I adore you, brother, and I’m grateful for the influence you’ve had on my life. What you offer to the table will never be replaced by the Sooner country! Just know that you will be remembered and missed.”
Another former running back, Joe Mixon, was the first to provide some long views on Gundy’s departure, taking to social media on Sunday night to express his sentiments on his former coach’s resignation.
“Coach Gundy is everything the University of Oklahoma and any other school could desire as a coach, teacher, and mentor,” Mixon wrote. “He is attentive, kind, bright, brilliant, witty, experienced, charitable, humble, and unselfish.” I would not have attended OU, survived at OU, stayed at OU, or excelled in life beyond OU if it hadn’t been for Coach Gundy. I owe him my education, professional job, and, most importantly, who I am as a person.”
“In closing, I give my heartfelt support and appreciation to Coach Gundy and will be extremely upset with the school, the programme, and the administrators if he is not permitted to stay as coach at the institution in the future.”
Former wide receiver Dede Westbrook had some ideas as well:
“Regardless of what anyone says, Coach Gundy will always have my respect as a guy and as a coach,” Westbrook stated. “From the first day he contacted me when I was playing JUCO, he went out of his way to show me he believed in me.” He always wanted me to be a better person as well as a better football player. I simply want to thank him from the bottom of my heart for taking the additional time to work with me. He didn’t have to follow me around town in my 1997 Lincoln Continental with the stereo blasting. He didn’t have to go to my hometown merely to have breakfast tacos with me at my favorite restaurant, and he definitely doesn’t have to phone me to check on me to this day. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for individuals like Coach Gundy, who always believed in me and pushed me to be better. I’ll always be proud to support excellent folks like them.”
The ramifications from this extraordinary circumstance has barely just begun, with additional information about what happened expected to emerge in the coming days.
